Note that these are definitions of terms that I came up with when trying to write an article on weblogs. I make these notes available in the hope that people will find them useful. If you have questions or would like to point out how unoriginal I am (with references, if possible) please email me. Contents = The stuff that appears in your browser window when you type in a particular URL and press return.[Note: i have been unable to come up with a satisfactory term for this. Webpage sucks and I can't think of any others. If you havea suggestion you will tell me won't you?] entity = a given unit of the web. A piece of text. A picture. All sets of contents. A randomly selected set of sets of contents subentity = an entity that is part of a larger entity. A word (part of a sentance entity). Coherent link = a link where both entities have a known relationship. For instance: If I create page a and then create page b and then put a link on page a to page b, and if I have made page b (or some subset of it) to be linked to by page a then it is a coherent link [Note that this could well qualify as the worst sentance I have written in some time] Incoherent link = a link where one entity was created with knowledge or consideration for the other. i.e. if I place a link on my weblog to a particular webpage then that link can be said to be incoherent. coherent entity = an entity consisting only coherent links. A sentance. All sets of contents. Amazon.com. Incoherent entity = an entity that has some incoherent links. The web. |
